R.I.P.

Two days ago we were still moaning about the disappointing iPhone 4S, who would ever thought that the legendary Steve Jobs would pass away two days later?

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Thank you for your encouragement Steve, and I will always remember that in my heart.

Believe

The best 5 days in the United States. I saw the best of the world, and I met some of the best people in my life. Sounds so clic, but life is like a dream - miracles happen when you least expected it.

Keep believing.

The Art of Arranging

I started reading this book today, Ultimate Method for Reaching the Esentials (佐藤可士和之超級整理術) by Japanese Graphic Designer Kashiwa Sato, and I thought it was very clever.  In this ever so complicated world, we always tend to take in so much information every single second that we lose sight of things easily.  Through tidying space, information and thinking, we eventually have a better picture of what the essentials are and lead to more efficient problem-solving.  Not only can this apply to design, it can also be applied in our everyday life.

I'm only in the first few chapters of the book, but I already think that's what I've been lacking these days.  Too many things cluttered on my desk, too much information to take, too many things to think about.  Just too much going on in life I get a little stuck.

This book also reminds me of some impressive project I saw on the web few days ago.  Swiss Artist Ursus Wehrli is releasing a new book called The Art of Clean Up, where he takes everyday scenes or disorder and rearranges them into neat rows, sorted by different attributes.  Here are some of them.

Are you stuck in life at the moment? If yes, it's time to start arranging.

"Humans are the best on the planet at imitating. And we tend to imitate what is successful. If you see that people are walking out of a shop with a widescreen TV and trainers, a certain kind of person thinks why shouldn't I do that?"

The world means nothing without you

And afterall, human beings are all that matters.
Without men, there is no love on Earth.
And love is all that matters.

Speak the truth, keep the integrity.

Art must be beautiful?

by Korean artist Park Kyung-Sun. truly beautiful.

Will you call this beautiful?

Kids imitating sculptures by Yi Hwan-Kwon.
Are they beautiful? I don't know.
But they certainly make you think
from a very different angle.

I look forward to the real-life version of this
- by Hong Kong designer Douglas Young.

The annual debate at HK Art Fair this year was titled 'Art must be beautiful', and what Singaporean Artist Ming Wong did had brought much shock to many people.  Against the topic, he started stripping his clothes off, from the Maggie Cheung look as in In the Mood For Love to only dirty underwear left.  His point was that what is beautiful on the outside might not be beautiful inside, which I truly agree.  There is always many ways to look at things.  He also stated that "Hong Kong is captivating like a woman wearing an expensive fur coat but underneath wears dirty knickers." Well...this, is a very subjective statement.

ART
What is art? In general art is any kind of creations often involving expressions and emotions, but the word has been used so extensively that anything can be called art.  As I've seen recently from a shop display, that 'Sport is Art'.  Really?

MUST BE
There isn't anything called MUST in this world.  Nothing is a must.

BEAUTIFUL
What is beauty?  Beauty is such a subjective thing, what is beautiful to you might not be beautiful to me.  It also depends on how you see it.  There is a beauty in everything.

With all these words more than subjective, I don't see any point to debate on this.  But even with my subjective definition of these words, I don't think art must be beautiful.  They are often stirring, sad, lonely, ugly, incomplete etc., giving me space to think and allowing me to see from a different point of view.  Of course, as a human being, I am naturally attracted to beautiful things, but they are definitely not the only things that attract me.

Apart from this very interesting debate, I must also say, the art pieces from Korea are really outstanding.

Bettina Rheims

Some of the most interesting photos I have ever seen, French photographer Bettina Rheims's photographs really fascinate me.  So much drama, so emotional, so mysterious, so controversial, so beautiful.  And behind all the beauty, there's always a story behind.  I have never thought of such outstanding sensual quality from women, but she's right - this emotional touch we see from women, we will never be able to find it in men.  It is fragility, but it is also a strength that can only be found in women.
