HYPERREALITY

我們都活在一個真實與非真實間的世界。

We all live in a world of HYPERREALITY.

The word HYPERREALITY originated from French sociologist/philosopher Jean Baudrillard.

"The very definition of the real has become: that of which it is possible to give an equivalent reproduction... The real is not only what can be reproduced, but that which is always already reproduced: that is the hyperreal... which is entirely in simulation."

"Illusion is no longer possible, because the real is no longer possible."

I was playing with typography on my name last week, and I discovered something else that my name could actually be.  Rosalie becomes a lie.

I went to the Creative Ecologies: Hong Kong for the Design Dialogue with a few emerging designers in Hong Kong, and Graphic Designer Leo Chan mentioned a lot of contradictions in his work.  The ideas of war and peace, reversal evolution, the imperfect Snow White....There are so many contradictions in life.  Is what we see real? Can we really believe what we see?  He also defined design as religion, which I think is very true.  What is right and what is wrong?  What is true and what is false?  There are no guidelines to it whatsoever, and believing in ourselves is the best design we could make.

City Magazine explored the topic of AUTHENTICITY this month, and brought up the idea of hyperreality.  In this highly commercial world, when everything is mediated, when our city is being planned extensively, is authenticity still possible?

When things no longer sit in the right position, am I still the ME that I used to be?

And finally, the truth is, we can't distinguish what is true anymore.

hyperreality: a reality more real than reality

there's always two sides to look at things.

which one is the reality?

design is a religion.

and what really is religion anyway?

when things change perspective, is it still authentic anymore?
